How to bet on volleyball – The rules of the sport
Volleyball is a team sport played on a 9 x 18 metre court, involving six players either side of a net (2.43m high for men, 2.24m high for women). Both teams have to rally with a ball over the net, trying to either land it on the other team’s side of the court or force their opponents to fault.
A team can touch the ball up to three times in one go – but individual players cannot touch it twice in a row. A ‘block,’ meanwhile, does not count within a team’s tally of three. As well as blocking, there are several types of shot – e.g. bump, dig or spike.
There are also many different ways to fault. For example, the most common faults in volleyball are hitting the ball outside of the boundaries on a return, touching the net during a game or double hitting (the same player touching the ball twice consecutively).
Often considered a niche market, it could be easier for bettors to find value in volleyball betting after some research.
Generally, the ball is played with a person’s hands or arms, although it is allowed to hit any part of the body. To win a match, teams must first win sets, doing so by scoring 25 points before their opponents. If a set is tied at 24-24, teams must win by a two-point margin. Matches are usually best-of-five sets.
All players within a team wear matching kits, except for the libero. This is a special position in which a player is not allowed to serve or block and does not count as a normal substitution (teams are otherwise allowed six per set). The full rules of volleyball can be found on the official website of the sport’s governing body.
Volleyball betting – Available Markets
Pinnacle offers the following markets on volleyball betting:
Money Line
Just like in handball betting or MMA betting, the Money Line in volleyball refers to betting on who will win the match.
Handicap
Handicap betting is offered when one team is considered a heavy favourite against another. To level the playing field, the bookmaker will offer a handicap on the number of sets in the winning margin.
For example, if one team has a handicap of -2.5, a bet on them will only be successful if they win in straight sets. Backing the opposing team on +2.5 will win you the bet even if they lose the match – as long as they claim a set.
Total Sets
Volleyball Betting App
Totals betting involves predicting whether the number of sets in a volleyball match will be above or below a figure provided by the bookmaker (e.g. 3.5). This allows you to bet on how close a match will be rather than who will win it, giving you a degree of flexibility and having no reliance whatsoever on the Money Line.

For the on-court action itself, there are several factors unique to volleyball. Firstly, the quality of individuals is far less important than in sports such as soccer or basketball. In volleyball, the strength and cohesion of a team as a unit is what matters most and, for this reason, the number of games played has a significant impact.
Volleyball teams often play a high volume of matches with short regeneration times in between. This causes fatigue and means form can vary, especially when some matches are less important over the course of a season. A final factor is the venue. Volleyball venues can be very different, with the height, layout and distance of halls all impacting players.
When learning how to bet on volleyball, a concept worth considering is the Pareto Principle. This suggests sports which are less popular enable greater accuracy from bettors without as much effort. In other words, specialising in volleyball betting may be more effective than a mainstream sport. This is due to a lower volume of available information and less competition.
